| Buoy Telemetry: Automated Quality Control
| The near real-time data presented here is intended to provide a 'snapshot' of current conditions within Narragansett Bay and has been subjected to automated QC pipelines. QA of data is performed following manufacturer guidelines for calibration and servicing of each sensor. QC'd datasets that have undergone additional manual inspection by researchers is provided in a 3 month lagging interval. Following the publication of human QC'd data, automated QC'd data from the previous 3 month window will be removed. See the 'Buoy Telemetry: Manually Quality Controlled' dataset for the full quality controlled dataset. The Automated QC of measurements collected from buoy platforms is performed following guidelines established by the Ocean Observatories Initiative (https://oceanobservatories.org/quality-control/) and implemented in R.\n Spike Test: To identify spikes within collected measurements, data points are assessed for deviation against a 'reference' window of measurement generated in a sliding window (k=7) . If a data point exceeds the deviation threshold (N=2), the spike is replaced with the 'reference' data point, which is determined using a median smoothing approach in the R package 'oce'. Despiked data is then written into the instrument table as 'Measurement_Despike'.\n Global Range Test: Data points are checked against the maximum and minimum measurements using a dataset of global measurements provided by IOOC (https://github.com/oceanobservatories/qc-lookup). QC Flags from global range tests are stored in the instrument table as 'Measurement_Global_Range_QC'. QC Flags: Measurement within global threshold= 0, Below minimum global threshold =1, Above maximum global threshold =2.\n Local Range Test: Data point values are checked against historical seasonal ranges for each parameter, using data provided by URI GSO's Narragansett Bay Long-Term Plankton Time Series (https://web.uri.edu/gso/research/plankton/). QC Flags from local range tests are stored in the instrument table as 'Measurement_Local_Range_QC'. Local Range QC Flags: Measurement within local seasonal threshold= 0, Below minimum local seasonal threshold =1, Above maximum local seasonal threshold =2.\n Stuck Value Test: To identify potential stuck values from a sensor, each data point is compared to subsequent values using sliding 3 and 5 frame windows. QC Flags from stuck value tests are stored in the instrument table as 'Measurement_Stuck_Value_QC' QC Flags: No stuck value detected= 0, Suspect Stuck Sensor (3 consecutive identical values) =1, Stuck Sensor (5 consecutive identical values) =2.\n Instrument Range Test: Data point values for meterological measurements are checked against the manufacturer's specified measurement ranges. QC Flags: Measurement within instrument range= 0, Measurement below instrument range =1, Measurement above instrument range =2.\n\ncdm_data_type = Other\nVARIABLES:\ntime (Datetime, seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)\n... | Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Programme (GTSPP) Data, 1985-present
| The Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Programme (GTSPP) develops and maintains a global ocean temperature and salinity resource with data that are both up-to-date and of the highest quality. It is a joint World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) program. It includes data from XBTs, CTDs, moored and drifting buoys, and PALACE floats. For information about organizations contributing data to GTSPP, see http://gosic.org/goos/GTSPP-data-flow.htm . The U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) maintains the GTSPP Continuously Managed Data Base and releases new 'best-copy' data once per month.\n\nWARNING: This dataset has a *lot* of data. If you request too much data, your request will fail.\n* If you don't specify a longitude and latitude bounding box, don't request more than a month's data at a time.\n* If you do specify a longitude and latitude bounding box, you can request data for a proportionally longer time period.\nRequesting data for a specific station_id may be slow, but it works.\n\n*** This ERDDAP dataset has data for the entire world for all available times (currently, up to and including the September 2024 data) but is a subset of the original NODC 'best-copy' data. It only includes data where the quality flags indicate the data is 1=CORRECT, 2=PROBABLY GOOD, or 5=MODIFIED. It does not include some of the metadata, any of the history data, or any of the quality flag data of the original dataset. You can always get the complete, up-to-date dataset (and additional, near-real-time data) from the source: https://www.nodc.noaa.gov/GTSPP/ . Specific differences are:\n* Profiles with a position_quality_flag or a time_quality_flag other than 1|2|5 were removed.\n* Rows with a depth (z) value less than -0.4 or greater than 10000 or a z_variable_quality_flag other than 1|2|5 were removed.\n* Temperature values less than -4 or greater than 40 or with a temperature_quality_flag other than 1|2|5 were set to NaN.\n* Salinity values less than 0 or greater than 41 or with a salinity_quality_flag other than 1|2|5 were set to NaN.\n* Time values were converted from \"days since 1900-01-01 00:00:00\" to \"seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00\".\n\nSee the Quality Flag definitions on page 5 and \"Table 2.1: Global Impossible Parameter Values\" on page 61 of\nhttps://www.nodc.noaa.gov/GTSPP/document/qcmans/GTSPP_RT_QC_Manual_20090916.pdf .\nThe Quality Flag definitions are also at\nhttps://www.nodc.noaa.gov/GTSPP/document/qcmans/qcflags.htm .\n\ncdm_data_type = TrajectoryProfile\nVARIABLES:\ntrajectory (Trajectory ID)\n... | Narragansett Bay Monthly Transect (NuShuttle)
| Narragansett Bay Monthly Transect. Attribute Accuracy Report: The temperature sensor was accurate to within 0.003 degrees C however due to a lag in response time of the sensor as it was towed through the water, results were only reported to within 0.01 degrees C. Conductivity measurements were accurate to within 0.005 mmho/cm. The accuracy of salinity values derived from these conductivity measurements varies with temperature and pressure, however under typical environmental conditions values should be within 0.01 psu or better. The calibration of the conductivity cell was tested in the lab using a resistor of known resistance prior to the cruise. Chlorophyll concentrations are accurate to within 3%, however, chlorophyll readings are from in vivo fluorescence, whereas the instrument was calibrated using a chlorophyll standard in acetone, and as a result the chlorophyll fluorescence can be expected to underestimate the overall concentration due to effects such as cell shading, scattering and photochemical quenching of fluorescence. This was illustrated by samples taken for lab analysis at calibration stations during this and previous cruises with this sensor. It was found that the in situ in vivo readings can underestimate the lab extracted chlorophyll estimates by over a factor of 3. The chlorophyll values presented here are the uncorrected in vivo values. Oxygen readings were accurate to within 2% of saturation (i.e. accuracy is partly dependent on salinity, temperature and pressure which determine the saturation value for dissolved oxygen). Prior to the cruise the oxygen sensor was lab calibrated using an oxygen saturated seawater bath at equilibrium with the atmosphere, and Winkler titrations were used to verify the oxygen concentration of the calibration bath. Logical Consistency Report: Data were processed using a Matlab routine that checks for out of range values. Any positions for which the degrees column does not equal 41 degrees north latitude or 71 degrees west longitude were deleted. Any temperature values not between -2 an 29 degrees C were deleted. Chlorophyll values were deleted if they were not between 0 and 30 mg m^-3. Pressure values not between 0 and 35 dbars were omitted. Conductivity values less than 0 were omitted. Three calibration stations were performed during the cruise at which samples were taken for to measure chlorophyll, oxygen, salinity and temperature independently. These measurements were used as a check on the sensor data. In the event that the calibrations samples indicated a problem with the sensor data, action would be taken to correct or eliminate those results as needed. At each calibration station the depth readings are also checked against 2 independent depth sensors, while the sensor is hanging at an approximately known depth. Anytime the oxygen sensor was restarted the first 2 minutes of data were discarded from the dataset due to the time required for the SBE-13 oxygen electrode to ionize. Completeness Report: Some data points were omitted from this data set. These data points typically corresponded to very near surface samples where the instruments were breaching the surface of the water, causing anomalous readings. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: All horizontal positions were determined by differential Global Positioning System (GPS) with an accuracy of +/- 5 meters. Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: Depths were determined by a pressure sensor accurate to within 0.2 dbars (1 dbar is approximately equivalent to 1 meter of depth). Process Description: This data was collected during a research cruise in Narragansett Bay, RI aboard the R/V Capn Bert. Data was collected using a Chelsea Technologies Group (CTG) NuShuttle towed undulating sampling platform permitting underway profiling of the water column. The NuShuttle contained a CTG Aquapak Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD)/Fluorometer that measured conductivity (salinity), temperature, pressure (depth) and chlorophyll fluorescence. Oxygen data was collected using a Seabird SBE-13 dissolved oxygen sensor. Prior to each cruise the oxygen sensor is calibrated in the lab, and the CTD is tested to ensure accurate readings. The cruise began at Quonset Point in the West Passage of Narragansett Bay. The ship headed south into RI Sound, then north into the East Passage of Narragansett Bay to Mt. Hope Bay and Fall River, then to Fields Point in the Providence River, then south down the West Passage returning to Quonset Point. The tow speed was maintained at approximately 8 knots. Calibration stations were performed at the beginning and end of the cruise, as well as during the cruise at near the Newport bridge to verify results. Following the cruise all data were processed by a Matlab routine that calibrates the raw instrument output, and removes anomalous values. Latitude Resolution: 0.001 minutes. Longitude Resolution: 0.001 minutes. Horizontal Datum Name: North American Datum of 1983. Ellipsoid Name: Geodetic Reference System 80. Semi-Major Axis: 6378137 meters. Denominator of Flattening: 298.257. Depth Resolution: 0.1 meters. Entity Type Label: NuShuttle transect. Entity Type Definition: Measurements of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll made underway using a towed undulating NuShuttle sampling platform. Attribute Definition: The salt content of the water derived from measurements of conductivity by a Chelsea Technologies Group Aquapak CTD/Fluorometer. Conductivity is used to estimate salinity according to the practical salinity scale of 1978. Attribute Definition: Water temperature measured by a Chelsea Technologies Group Aquapak CTD/Flourometer. Attribute Definition: Chlorophyll concentration determined by in situ measurements of in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence using a Chelsea Technologies Group CTD/Fluorometer. | NDBC Standard Meteorological Buoy Data, 1970-present
| The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) distributes meteorological data from\nmoored buoys maintained by NDBC and others. Moored buoys are the weather\nsentinels of the sea. They are deployed in the coastal and offshore waters\nfrom the western Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean around Hawaii, and from the\nBering Sea to the South Pacific. NDBC's moored buoys measure and transmit\nbarometric pressure; wind direction, speed, and gust; air and sea\ntemperature; and wave energy spectra from which significant wave height,\ndominant wave period, and average wave period are derived. Even the\ndirection of wave propagation is measured on many moored buoys. See\nhttps://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/measdes.shtml for a description of the measurements.\n\nThe source data from NOAA NDBC has different column names, different units,\nand different missing values in different files, and other problems\n(notably, lots of rows with duplicate or different values for the same time\npoint). This dataset is a standardized, reformatted, and lightly edited\nversion of that source data, created by NOAA NMFS SWFSC ERD (email:\nerd.data at noaa.gov). Before 2020-01-29, this dataset only had the data\nthat was closest to a given hour, rounded to the nearest hour. Now, this\ndataset has all of the data available from NDBC with the original time\nvalues. If there are multiple source rows for a given buoy for a given\ntime, only the row with the most non-NaN data values is kept. If there is\na gap in the data, a row of missing values is inserted (which causes a nice\ngap when the data is graphed). Also, some impossible data values are\nremoved, but this data is not perfectly clean. This dataset is now updated\nevery 5 minutes.\n\nThis dataset has both historical data (quality controlled, before\n2023-12-01T00:00:00Z) and near real time data (less quality controlled,\nwhich may change at any time, from 2024-01-01T00:00:00Z on).\n\ncdm_data_type = TimeSeries\nVARIABLES:\nstation (Station Identifier)\n...
